Radical crusading idea #2: Walking Meetings!
Yes, you heard me! Walking meetings! This means NOT sitting on your butt on the other side of the table.
The advantages of walking meetings are numerous and on several fronts: professional, career, psychological and physical.
- Starting with professional – you will get better results from the meeting as the very fact of being out in the fresh air and moving leads to more creativity and flow in your thoughts and ideas – it promotes out of the box thinking and finding better solutions to problems, faster! Not only that, it exercises your memory which benefits you in other aspects of your work. It also means you remain totally focused on the meeting and the person you are with. There are no irritating distractions and you can’t pretend to be taking notes on your mobile phone or laptop, or scribbling totally unrelated notes while walking and talking!
- Career – Not only are you providing better feedback, improved solutions and better results because of 1. Above, but you are also showing yourself to be confident, innovative and a thought leader – sure signs of leadership material and someone who is on their way UP the career ladder, a fast-tracker. In addition, you are actively helping improve your colleagues’ physical and mental health which in turn benefits the company!
- Psychological – Movement, fresh air, changing the scenery, doing something to break up the day are excellent stress busters as well as giving you an energy boost and enhancing your serotonin levels. If you do a couple of walking meetings a day you can significantly minimize negative stress and boost your coping abilities, and think of how much you, as instigator of this walking meeting, are helping the other meeting participants as well!
- Health – Sitting at a desk all day is proven to be a significant cause of cardiovascular and other diseases. Basically we have become a sedentary race and this has drastic consequences on our health. Having walking meetings greatly helps counteract this – it gets you moving, the blood flowing, heart pumping, lungs breathing, boosts your metabolism, increases circulation, tones muscles and definitely makes you fitter.
Walking and talking at a brisk pace is a great accomplishment – Nilofer in the video below now does 30-50 km per week of walking meetings! I regularly bring my dogs too… J
